| Customer Reviews: Cheap Quad and overclockable with some work... February 22, 2009 Tekmage1 (New York) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As an AMD fanboy, I was excited to be one of the first to pick up a Phenom 9500. Paired this with an MSI K9A2 cf-f motherboard, 500W Ultra power supply, 4 gigs of corsair 800 mhz memory, an XFX 8600GT XXX, under Vista 32.
After a bois update on the mobo, the Phenom was running stable at 2.2Ghz.
Multitasking with this CPU is OUTSTANDING!!! Benchmarks came in MUCH lower than expected however. After Vista SP1 installed with the automatic TLB patch, I decided to do some research on overclocking this cpu as well as disabling the performance reducing patch. Needless to say after some Bios fsb tweaking, and disabling the TLB patch, I have this gem clocked at 2.4 GHZ, in addition to gaining an increase in performance. (About 5 more fps in games was the most noticable improvement)I get 31 FPS AVG on COH DX10 with all setting on mostly high, and 25 fps avg in Crysis on all medium settings. With a better video card this rig would smoke :-)
Considering all the hastle to bring this CPU with the TLB issue back from the dead....you'll have to be the one to decide if its worth it.
Not a bad chip at all for a rock bottom budget quad. An average PC user would be more than happy with the performance.
Once tweaked, this chip turned out to be a little gem.

A while back the motherboard on my system failed and I found myself in the need to rebuild my system and started shopping around for a new processor and motherboard. Decided to get into the Phenom family. Got my system up and running solidly yet I am not too thrilled.
Price wise, it seemed a better deal that Intel Quad and on paper it was supposed to be a vastly superior processing platform, in reality the Quads are somewhat better performing (based on benchmarks that I have run myself using SiSoft's Sandra lite). My understanding is that this early model (9500) Phenom had performance issues and it shows. AMD claims that in the latter Phenoms the issues have been resolved but I do not know anyone running one so I can't really say. Well, a year or so from now I will plug in a newer Phenom and see what happens!?
As far as over clocking, I seldom do it so I have no idea how far you can push the Phenoms
Also, motherboards that truly support Phenoms are currently rare and expensive; this may wipe out any advantages in price over Intel's Quads.
A point to consider, if you are looking to upgrade from a fast Pentium 4 (single core)and you are used to normally run one major processor intensive application at the time, you may not really see much of an improvement (as in my case) and the risk, trouble an expense of upgrading may not be justifiable (I had no choice, my old motherboard just failed one day).
Multiple core processors really show their stuff when you run more than one process intensive applications side by side or multi threaded gaming, then these things really smoke.
Great processor March 31, 2008 Alejo Aguirre (San Jose, Costa Rica) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is my first build. Had used AMD CPU's before and I'm very pleased with this processor's performance. You must be a hardware freak or be running highly specialized applications to ask for more. Great for media and serious muti-tasking.
