 The best bang for the buck February 10, 2010

I have searched for over a year, watching prices on new products skyrocket, watching others stay the same. I had everything-1000 watt power supply, huge quiet case full of fans, Geforce 9800 GX2 video card, awesome motherboard. Finally, after much soul searching, internet bulletin board/forum searching I decided on this processor. I added 8 gig of ram. It rocks. It's stable. It is unbelieveably fast and runs everything my son can throw at it by way of gaming at the highest levels.
Never a stutter. Runs Win7 (64bit). No glitches. First thing I've built from scratch and it actually works. There may be some other processors out there which have higher ratings, but, for my money, THIS WAS MORE THAN I EXPECTED. The new 'i-whatever' processors are out and the higher intel core extremes, but I can't see paying the price of a good used car for just a part of a gaming computer. The video card was pricey enough. Now I've got to find another video card to match to run them dual-banging to take care of the near future of gaming.

It is a very good product and very easy to install. It was an upgarde from an Intel Q8300.
I bought this processesor because I needed the virtual capability for Windows 7.
It was as plug and play as you can get. After it was installed I was able to run Windows 7 virtual mode. Did not require a reinstall for the OS.
Bang for the buck January 27, 2010

I replaced an Intel Core 2 Duo E-8500 with this one which actually runs at a slower clock speed. Not much difference in day to day apps, but more intensive applications such as video or 3-D rendering are much faster. I also upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and upgraded from 2 to 4 GB of RAM so that probably accounts for at least some of the speed up. Good Quad Core for the money. I am using a Noctua NH-U12DX heat sink, which keeps the processor much cooler than the stock heat sink.

I have had a Q9550 for 10 months and used it in a variety of applications. This thing just handles stuff without choking. I mean, there are easy ways you can freeze it up; but for any typical home or work users, there is nothing to worry about when you are operating your computer.
This thing also runs cool at 50c when 100% and room temp when idle, with an average aftermarket cooler. A typical 45nm 95w quad core. Gorgeous 12m L2 cache. Clocked to 3.6g at stock voltage.
Price wise, $289 is too much. Even in early 2009 there were deals for less than $250 and at some point it was a little over $200, making its performance/price ratio almost perfect.
Compared to i7/5, I think the reason (if any) that would make you choose the newer generation is not the performance of the CPU themselves but other consideration in terms of the whole system. In many cases Q9550/9650 are hardly out-performed by their class.

I bought the Q9550 for 214.00 after watching the price for a few weeks. Man What a deal,very happy.I have a gigabyte p45ud3p mobo and put a Zalman heatsink fan with it and man oh man one button overclok from 2.83 to 3.66.Lol really nice on almost all accounts.Im running at 20c idle and no farther than 26c running games.And no farther than 30c on system temp. Running windows 7 if that needs to be said.The only drawback .... not really is the fan,lol not good.Listen to the others and do yourself a favore and get another fan.You only want to do this once and do it right.Intel dropped the ball on this fan.The Intel core2 Quad Q9550 is worth the 249.00 no need to even upack the fan.No water cooling, just front and back 120s and my excellent Zalman green monster and i get these temps.
