5 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade For Socket 775 Systems   July 5, 2010

Popping in this QUAD was a fast and simple way to upgrade one of our 775 based systems. The speed increase and video rendering times over a Core2 was definitely noticable.

Although the chip is rather expensive for a legacy tech, it was a economical choice because we didn't have to upgrade our MB and DDR2 ram by going with the i7 (1366) platform.

If you have a existing 775 setup and want to give it a boost, i highly recommend picking up one of these chips when they are still available.

5 out of 5 stars Great for web developers!   June 21, 2010

This processor is amazing. Going from the Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 Processor, 2.5 GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB, LGA775 to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0 GHz 12M L2 Cache 1333MHz FSB LGA775 Quad-Core Processor is like going from a skateboard to a Ferrari. I was a little hesitant about the price as compared to the new i7 cores, but it was well worth it when considering I didn't have to upgrade my motherboard and RAM.

The install process was quick and easy. With the Thermaltake Meorb Low Profile CPU Cooler for HTPC Case with 4-Pin PWM Fan - CLP0527 and Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound, 3.5 Grams the processor is running stable at 30-38°C.

I am a website designer and developer running Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS, but unfortunately I must still rely on some Windows-based software. With the virtualization support (and the ability to dedicate cores to the virtual machine) running Windows XP inside Virtualbox with the Q9650 is incredibly fast and smooth. As an added bonus, I have no more problems with running fullscreen Flash video in Linux.

5 out of 5 stars upgrade older model cpu   June 10, 2010

The cpu arrived promptly and in very good shape as I come to expect from Amazon. Although already obsolete in the PC computer component world, it was fine for me to be able to upgrade my computer for a reasonable price as oppose to change the motherboard, buy new memory, and cpu.

I saved up a bunch of money for this processor, installation a 1st grader could do, shipping was great, and THE STATS FOR THIS ITEM ARE GREAT!!! Especially, since this is one of the premium processors for the LGA775 socket motherboard. The only complaint is that it does not seem to work with my computer well. I mean, it won't even get past the boot screen; it just freezes up. I don't want to give this thing a low star rating just because I don't know what it can do yet. I have ready other reviews and all of them are positive, so I am just going to add my optimism to this one. I read numerous sites saying that it should be compatible with my motherboard and I have contacted Intel Tech support which I had good support. I have not resolved the issue yet, but I still need to contact my motherboard manufacturer. So, until then this thing is awesome from the stats! Will do an updated review later!
