Does what I need it to do September 29, 2009 Computer Geek I installed this into a Foxconn Destroyer motherboard - That crazy motherboard has everything in it including the kitchen sink.
I run it stable at 3.2 gig all day long and do allot of multitasking as well. I have run it higher to 3.9 gig but it was rebooting randomly.
I am also running in SLI two Nvidia 9600 cards with 768 DDR2 memory; hey it play crysis at 1600x1200 at 45fps and above topped at 67fps. If you want nuts that motherboard I CAN RUN TWO OR THREE OR FOUR CARDS SLI.
I am using a chilltech cpu cooler that is air AND USES A TEC as well; I stay frosty at 31-30c ALL THE TIME.
Quick Quad July 28, 2009 M. Smith (New York) Had this processor for a year or so and I must say it is an excellent performer. This is the first time I have had 10 firefox windows, microsoft excel, CAD, windows media center, photoshop, you name it, all running at the same time and never see over 60% on just 2 of 4 cores. You can preach benchmarks all you want but the king is the almighty dollar and this is true bang for your buck. At this price this chip is a steal and I have seen it for even cheaper. It OC's pretty well too. 3GHz without voltage increase and slightly over 3.2GHz with small increase. If you need a fast, cheap, rock solid quad then this is it.
Phenom 9950 performance June 4, 2009 Christopher M. Dawson (Silver Spring MD USA) the overall performance is great the stock clock speed is 2.6Ghz. I have it clocked at 2.8Ghz stable as a rock. As for heat i am using an asus silent square evo with AS5 thermal compond and idle temps are about 46C and under heavy load (Crysis on ultra high) temps never go above 56C. I have just recieved my new cooler that i am about to test which is a Coolermaster V10 which is not only a great air cooler but also has a built in thermoelectric cooler!!!.
Best Bang for Buck May 26, 2009 PR Alban (Monroe, NY) I have to admit, I am an AMD fan - have only built systems with AMD processors. The previous processor bought was an Athlon X2 +3800 (socket 939 - older), and I was not prepared for the difference a few years makes. Windows Vista Ultimate x64 positively snaps with this processor - windows open extremely fast, maxed out the Windows Experience Index, programs opened and installed incredibly fast. (I am sure the Windows 7 rating will be on a similar level, but haven't tested yet...)
Look forward to playing games with this one, and video conversion is outrageous. Files that took my Alienware laptop 8 hours or more are nearly halved in conversion time, with this processor.
Get this processor and the "Frequently Bought with" motherboard (MSI) and memory. Definitely worth a slight premium, and costs much less than a comparable spec with Intel.
I am not an overclocker (too much trouble, really), so no feedback on that level, but the MB BIOS had some great, simple options, if I ever decide to experiment...
Get this baby.
Screams under VMWare May 18, 2009 TB-10 Pilot (Columbus, Ohio) Bought this for my new VMWare ESXi server. It screams without even overclocking. I'm running it at the normal 2.6ghz and it's not even exceeding 100F. People have overclocked this bad boy to 3.2ghz so I know I have lots of cushion in there when I need a little more umfff.
Used the supplied AMD heatsink and fan, very easy install. The thermal compound is pre-applied to the heatsink so you just install the processor, put on the HS, plug in the fan lead and away you go.
A perfect AM2+ processor as a starter especially if you have a MB that is AM2+ and AM3 complaint. You can start this thing at 2.6, take it up to 3.0 and then if that's not enough, by that time the AM3's will be down in price and you can just upgrade to an AM3.
The 3 level cache really does shine in this as ESXi really uses it to it's advantage.
