4 out of 5 stars Great for listening to books   August 27, 2008
H. Cohen (Boston, MA)
I bought the Zen a month ago and am very satisfied with my purchase. I previously owned the Zen Micro, and was also happy with it. Creative seems to have corrected a few bugs in the Zen Micro(such as, not being able to use large WMA files). The Zen seems to be more reliable. They have also improved the user interface.

I have satisfactorally listened on my Zen to files downloaded from many sites, including NetLibrary and Overdrive.

One of the features that is a must for listening to books in bookmarking. Unfortunately, Creative doesn't advertise that it is one of the few MP3 manufacturers that have this feature. It took a lot of work to find out whether the Zen has bookmarking. They really should advertise this feature.

The Zen only froze once, and I was able to restart it immediatly using the reset button. I now keep a small safty pin attached to the ear plug wire for this use.

The documentation for the Zen stinks! It is awkwardly written and incomplete. I don't know how I would be able to effectively use the Zen if I hadn't had Zen Micro exprience, which, by the way, was reasonably documented. The online videos in the Support part of the Creative web page are mostly marketing videos--totally useless.

The screen scratches easily. I was tempted to buy the protective screen and a case, but I found Amazon adds considerable charges to their advertised price. I am now protecting my Zen with kitchen plastic wrap. It is working beautifully; I can control the Zen through the wrap and it is probably less bulky than a case. If I ever want to look at pictures, I can just unwrap the Zen.

5 out of 5 stars I like it, but...   August 26, 2008
Robert Cotton (Orlando FL)
I bought this Zen to replace an old Creative 60 Gb Zen Xtra Jukebox that was having hard drive problems. I like the new player. One of the biggest problems with the old Zen Xtra was that the display was extremely hard to read. Not so with this one. I really like the ability to use SD cards to expand the storage, but agree with another reviewer that not being able to do playlists for material on the card is a big drawback. Mostly, I use the player when riding on cross-country plane trips. The 8 Gb is adequate for the round trip and some listening in the hotel room, all without a recharge.

The biggest drawback for me is that the Zen Xtra had all 60 Gb filled. With only 8 Gb, I have to try to guess what I'm going to be in the mood to listen to and get that loaded onto the new Zen player before the trip - a couple hours of work. Consequently I am going to bite the bullet and get an iPod Classic so I can have it all with me and ready if I decide I want to listen to Pink Floyd instead of La Traviata.

2 out of 5 stars zen player   August 24, 2008
Ronald A. Kronowitz (savannah georgia)
the compactness of the player is great. the earphones are impossible to use for me - had to throw them away. i have great difficulty accessing the materials. i do not know which buttoms to use and have to use trial and error. i did not find instruction manual to be too helpful. i have an earlier version of this product and find it more user friendly for me.

1 out of 5 stars Replaced twice, still defective   August 21, 2008
Gene Hotz (midwest, USA)
I bought one of these a few weeks ago. Loaded software, charged player, downloaded songs. After about 10 minutes of playing, screen went black, couldn't charge, it was just dead. Ordered a replacement. This time it played for maybe 15 minutes, and then the exact same thing happened. It is truly a piece of junk.

4 out of 5 stars Zen mp3 player   August 17, 2008

This is a great product. We own two with different GB capacities and they both perform very well. They are easy to use and do not require converting files like with an ipod. Highly recomended!
