Very Good Product But WARNING! August 21, 2008 Lord Slaygon 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Product is great. The reviews here are very accurate. Does tend to overheat easily, is noisy, and the software is not great, but they make a VERY reliable drive (probably one of the best) so it's worth it. The plus side is the price and the outstanding disk array hardware in the enclosure. However, be warned that many purchases I have made from Amazon direct (not their affiliates) has come with very little inner box padding or packing material. They shipped my scanner bouncing around inside a big box with no padding. It bounced around so much it tore 70% of the packing tape off the back of the outer box. Even if there is no visible damage to the scanner box (except the skuffs and small corner compressions) there is a very big danger of the scanner failing at any time due to the damage it may have sustained. Everytime I order an expensive or large item it arrives bouncing around inside a packing box with a ludicrous amount of padding that's 5% of what should be used. I am EXTREMELY disappointed at the fact that this continues to happen regardless of how many times I tell Amazon. This is the 3rd time. What is it going to take to insure that my purchases are packaged properly? I want the idiot(s) in shipping to get written up for this. Sorry, but what was supposed to be a very happy day getting my toy turned out to be another Amazon disappointment... I am going to cut/paste this into a review for every product I purchased that was improperly packaged.
TOO LOUD FOR A HOME OFFICE July 14, 2008 NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in Orbit) I decided to ignore the negative reviews warning about the noise levels of this and when I found it on a great sale I picked one up. "How loud can it be?" I thought. Well, PRETTY LOUD - and unfortunately the sale was final.
If truth be told, the Pro edition of these WESTERN DIGITAL external HardDrives is the best one: not only does it come with a triple interface (USB and two types of FW400 & FW800) but it also offers a RAID protection for one's data (halving its capacity though).
I have a number of these and so far I had found them reliable and solid. Luckily I do not keep them constantly ON but use them as cold storage. I planned to keep everyday backups on this one but there is no way I could stand the fan noise on a daily basis.
Good for corporate back up. Too loud for home applications.
1 TB Drive is Great June 23, 2008 Douglas V. Brooks (Chicago, IL United States) I was really worried about losing my photo images as I make a living off of them. I had pretty much filled my 250gb drive when I found the 1 TB. This drive allows for either 1 TB of storage or 2 - 500gb of mirrored storage meaning, there are 2 - 500gb drives inside the box and what you save to one, you save to the other. Should there ever be a failure of one drive, you have a backup on the other.
Easy to install, shows up as one 500gb drive on the desktop.
A little noisy, but works well June 5, 2008 R. Balasubramanian (Bangalore, India) This is the second WD external drive I purchased (the first was a 400 GB My Book). I use it to back up my computer data.
Good points: - large capacity - worked out of the box, no problems after 6 months of use (so far, so good!) - accepts 100-240V input, so I could use it (in India) without an adaptor
Bad points: - noisy, especially on startup - does not turn off when the computer is switched off, waste of electricity
All in all, a good product. I would definitely buy WD again.
Works as intended April 25, 2008 K Sed (TX, USA) There are a lot of mixed reviews on this, but my expierince has been great. The device has been ultra quiet except for 2 periods of 5-30 seconds. The first was the very first time I plugged it in. It made a high noise and got me worried but 5 seconds later it went quiet and stayed that way thru many time machine backups. The second was when I changed it from the default RAID 0 config to RAID 1. The formatting was very fast and the noise did not last more than 30 seconds.
What I love about it: 1) Very quiet. 2) Turns on and off with the iMac since its plugged int via USB. 3) Very good data protection since it offers RAID 1. 4) works flawlessly with Time Machine. 5) relative small size (given its 2 HDs) and nice design. 6) Tripple interface (USB, Firewire 400/800).
What I don't like: Nothing.
Should have bought the 2TB version. RAID 1 gives you half the capacity and 500GB is just not enough these days.
