Nice for home network: LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini August 18, 2008 Francisco Gonzalez Santander (Santiago, Chile) Summary: If you are planning to share documents, music, movies and anything at your home, this is the best option, even if you are a "basic" user, and if you consider the price... even better. But you have to be aware of the detail of what you are purshasing...
Review: - It's really quite. - Installation is just easy, and if you know how to manage your network, you can set a fix IP for the disk, so you could always find it at the same direction. - Transfer speed is a little bit slow, but if you want to play music or movies, it's enough faster to do it connected by wireless. Some interrumptions would be possible, but no too much to speak about it. - It's a gigabit disk, so if you want to improve the speed of the trasnfering, you shoud buy a gigabit switch, so you would improve the trasnfer speed, almost like an usb connection (for example: Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch). - You have to set the power option of the disk, otherwise it would be on all the time, consumming energy... - If you set the disk as a media server, you could easily access to the music or videos from your computer (itunes, media player) or from your playstation 3, so the network start to be very useful. - You have to be aware that it's not a USB disk, even it do have usb connection, because usb transfer protocol is just an emulation of IP ethernet connection, so the speed of the transfer will be the same of the speed of an ethernet connection. - I haven't used web connection, but I think it would be very slow, because the protocol of the connection. - If you need more space in the future, you can buy a new disk and connect it to this one, because it has an usb connection to set both disk together (as an arrangement of disks).
Disappointing Customer Service July 14, 2008 Ferdinand Lasinski (Juneau, AK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This unit has operated on a network for 16 months as primary backup. The unit requires periodic maintenance to be read by the server. It is loud. The unit has failed. After 4 days of dealing with customer service on a warranty issue, my frustration has lead me to purchase a competing product.
This Product is Junk June 26, 2008 S. J. 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This disk cratered only a couple of months after purchasing it. It was a piece of junk even while it was in use. Very frustrating and disappointing. We replaced it with a much more reliable product.
Great for Home network June 9, 2008 W. Chen (Oakland, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a hassle free gadget for home network - easy setup, easy operation, and barely any maintenance. The only thing I don't give it a five star is that there is no idle mode for the disk mini - potentially this will significantly reduce the product life and consume more power.
Perfect storage solution May 11, 2008 John Warren (Mesa, AZ USA) LaCie d2 Quadra 301110U 500 GB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
LaCie is the name to trust for external drive storage solutions. I have had several external hard drives for my graphic design business, and only LaCie has performed consistantly without trouble. It is easy to network to my system using an ethernet connection, and has incredible write and read speeds. Nothing is more aggravating than a slow write speed, or an external that crashes, which has happened to me with other brands. I would highly reccommend LaCie to anyone looking for a safe and fast electronic storage system.
