flimsy and worrisome... August 19, 2008 Teja Van Wicklen (NYC) This drive makes me nervous. The on/off button doesn't seem to have any effect so I have to unplug it to get it to turn off. Flimsy plastic - you get what you pay for. And the included cords are so loose they come out on their own while I'm working! Dangerous!
Outstanding 1TB Hard Drive August 12, 2008 Laurence Baume (Riverdale Park, MD) This is an outstanding product, and I'm very glad I bought it. Installation for a Mac is a breeze, and it works just as advertised. Warranty registration is a snap, and the Western Digital pages have good tech info and FAQs. I even like the automatic backup utility they include. It's easy to set up, and works. The first backup takes hours (I seleected files/folders with 200 gigs or so of data), but incremental backups are fairly fast. I prefer to use it when I'm not using other computer resources or applications since it slows them down a bit. It's easy for me to set it to do that backups over the dinner hour or even over night. I recommend this hard drive to anyone, Windows or Mac.
The drive works perfectly, if... July 14, 2008 Bernard Shaw (Istanbul) I have this drive for some time now. As people did, the first days I had problems with the drive not spinning up. It would work perfect one time, then just "sleep" the next. It would not boot with the computer although I hear the spinning sound (that's difficult as the drive's really quiet).
After thinking of returning it the first day, I decided to look at the causes. I have never had good experience with customer services, so I decided to go for it myself.
The problem turned out to be the USB cable given with the drive. The cable works perfectly but the casing just keeps the connector out. So you need to apply preassure to the connector. So I just switched to a USB cable with a longer metal connector end. Drive works perfectly, all the time.
Pitty that Western Digital did not notice such a small error in such a good external HDD.
GOBBAGE!! July 12, 2008 Enlightened (In Da A) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was supposed to buy the other Western Digital 1 TB but accidentally bought this one and it happened just like the others said. Plug it in light comes on but nothing else happens and tried it on multiple computers. I tried it about 100 times determined to get my money's worth and through out all those tries it showed up on the computer exactly 1 time. Convinced that it had started working I dragged a couple files into it (like a minuscule 200 mb... I'm no fool!) and left it alone for like a day and lo and behold the next day the power light was off for some odd reason (computer was still on) and it went back to being dead. I'm upset...This is the type of stuff I'm talking about....don't make no sense. Oh well it's going back to the store where I bought it...cuz that one that I have is Gobbage. Maybe I'll try a 500 gig even though I don't think that's enough.
Power management features make drive unstable on eSATA July 8, 2008 Misha Taylor (Tallahassee, FL USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This drive automatically spins down when not being used, and there is no way to disable this feature. Unfortunately on my computer under Windows, this means that the drive disappears in "My Computer" and the Disk Management tools if I don't use the drive for extended periods of time. The only way to get the computer to recognize the drive again is to power cycle the drive manually by pushing the power button on the back, it will not automatically "wake up" when I try to use the drive.
Western Digital's only recommendation was that I switch to a slower USB/Firewire connection, as their "button manager" software can keep the drive alive. This feature is not supported on the faster eSATA connection, however. (If that's the case, why did I pay more for an eSATA-capable drive?) At least the company did do an RMA exchange of my drive, just in case it was a problem with the drive or other components, but the replacement had the same issue too. This seems to be a "feature".
Their tech support also said that numerous customers have had similar issues if they plug the drive into a UPS or power strip. They recommend plugging the drive directly into a wall socket, but that didn't seem to help me at all.
I have another external eSATA drive from another vendor on the same computer (plugged into my UPS, no less), and it doesn't have this issue at all. I've left it connected for days not using it and the drive doesn't disappear. So it definitely appears to be an issue with this model of drive.
