BEWARE July 3, 2008 Dan Clegg (San Diego, CA USA) I purchased a previous version of the My Book series and after having disk corruption twice it died completely after less than 2 years. All data lost. Has Western Digital improved its reliability in these newer drives? I doubt it, and I'm not willing to risk it. Read up on other review sites and discussion forums, there are tons of complaints about Western Digital's drives failing. If I were you I would shop other brands. An unreliable drive is not worth owning no matter what price you get it for.
Hard drive failed completely after 14 months July 1, 2008 S. Campbell (St. Louis, Missouri USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased a Western Digital 500 GB My Book in May 2007, had it installed on my home network and last month (06/2008) it totally failed without reason or warning. My only options at this point are to pay for some extremely expensive data recovery ($1,600) or accept the loss of several years worth of pictures and documents. Needless to say, I am furious with this device.
So far so good. July 1, 2008 Skyline GTR (Rochester, NY, USA) Have had it for a month. Didn't use it often but so far so good. No problem to report yet.
Fast, quiet, reliable June 30, 2008 Ran Zilca (NY United States) I had mixed expectations for this drive. I have an ultraportable laptop with a relatively smalle drive, so this was meant to be my data drive when the laptop is docked, to be used ongoing and not just for backups etc.
I have my itunes library on it as well as most of my large docs. It works perfectly and feels as if it's a part of the machine. Highly recommended.
External hard drive - Western Digital 500 GB June 28, 2008 Frederick T. Brox (Chesapeake VA) About a month ago I purchased my second 500 GB external hard drive by Western Digital. The most recent is a My Book Essential 2.0. These are small, attractive drives that stand upright like a book and take very little real estate. They are very quiet and connect via a USB cable with no effort. They do have a separate power supply. They are fast to access data or have a backup performed. It goes without saying that I would buy another and recommend them to any user - the price is competitive and the quality is outstanding.
