Good portable drive November 25, 2008 CraigInChicago (Chicago) I'd say all in all this is a pretty good portable hard drive. It has lots of space for the price, it plugs in by USB which is convenient, and the transfer rate is pretty solid.
I've had this just short of a year now and I do use it constantly. I use it almost on a daily basis, so it ends up plugged in for long periods of time and the drive is constantly working. I wanted to provide this information as a preface to the below.
After one year of use, I have been starting to see 'Delayed Write Failures' in Windows when the drive has been on for a significant amount of time. What this means to me is simply that the drive completely freezes as does Windows and I have to unplug it and replug it in to get it working as well as free up Windows. Now I'm not sure if this is due to the drive overheating, or being over worked, but it tends to happen after using it to say watch a movie from the drive.
The drive still maintains all the information on it, but the more I see it the less I trust it to maintain the data I have on it.
All in all, good drive, just be careful of overworking it.
Good price, nice small form factor, not reliable. November 14, 2008 J. Nguyen (CA) I bought this and used it as an every day backup with my Mac. 6 months later, it stopped reading on my Mac as well as any other computer I tried to test it on. Luckily they had a 3 warranty on this product, so I dropped it off for RMA and get it replaced with a new one. 6 months is definitely not a reasonable lifespan for any hard drive these days and I had some hiccups with getting the RMA...long story.
ANyway, I might just sell it rather than using it, but I don't know which model I should buy that's as small and affordable and more reliable. I guess no HD is ever reliable. Good thing I have 2 backups.
Maybe i got a lemon? October 20, 2008 A. Stock So my HP laptop screen went out and needed to go in for service (dont even get me started on Hp!!) So i went out and bought an this hard drive and connected my computer to a screen and was able to transfer all my files to the hard drive. I was using the drive to access files for class until i got my computer and i also knew it was possible my hard drive was going to be wiped out during the repairs. Anyways my computer comes back 2 weeks later- luckily they didnt wipe out my hard drive- but when i plugged in my hard drive it wasnt being recognized- and any computer i plugged it into wouldnt recognize it. I couldnt return it because i couldnt find the UPC, so i called customer service which i must say was quite helpful. they had me uninstall it and then reinstall it and it then worked. around 6 weeks later my laptop was going back for the third time - my screen was out again and i couldnt even hook it up to an external screen- and my hard drive wasnt being recognized by any computer! i tried uninstallinga nd reinstalling and it didnt work! i called tech support and i told him i tried that and he asked who otld me to do that and i said the last tech support i spoke to and he said i shouldnt do that again! (very weird!- makes me a little wary of their tech support) Neways the guy concluded i had a defective hard drive and he told me to send it in- but now i dont have a back up to my computer and i cant access anything on my computer- so i had to bring my computer in and have them manually back up my files on a CD. I eventually found my UPC and since it was after the 30 days i wasnt able to return it but they let me exchange it (this is at circuit city). I havent tried the new one yet but im hoping this original one was a lemon!
True Blue September 4, 2008 Kathi A. Jones (Seattle, WA) I knew little about portable HD's, but after some research this one rose to the top. The SimpleTech offers me the space I need and is easy to use for someone not so technical. And then there is the color, true blue.
So far, so good September 2, 2008 J. Nixon (Washington Metro Area) I can't complain. The storage space is great. It's easy to use (plug and play). I'm not crazy about the online software that comes with it. That I found difficult to use. But so far, so good. Very compact.
