4 out of 5 stars Good drive, with a few oroblems   November 27, 2008
Meade J. Roberts (Portland, OR)
On the plus side, the drive is relatively quiet, it IS a network drive, and the price is good. If you want to use the network access, then that's another plus. I'm running Vista and have a problem with the backup software, DesktopMirror. Some of the file system I backup is unreadable. And I'm talking about basic files, like Documents and basic data files. Some subdirectories just don't allow access. Other people seem to have the same problems. Secondly, the media server will serve up all your shared directories as one share. I had broken up my iTunes libraries into music, books, and other, separate libraries, but if I share them, they all appear as one, huge library. By the way, the first time you access it, it might take 10 minutes or more for all the files to appear (building an index?). After that it's pretty fast. So, overall, I'm glad I got this drive. It has become the solution for a common data bank for our family's iTunes and photos.

3 out of 5 stars Software needs improvement   November 10, 2008
A. Sanderson
Using the drive a Airport Base in a mac household. The setup for the disk was reasonable and was able to get it up and working. However, the information for using some parts is rather lacking. For instance, I wanted to share music but certain formats are supported but yet it is not noted which ones. I find that the back tool hangs often to the point that it is unusable.

2 out of 5 stars Greate company - poor product   October 29, 2008
M. Kelerikh
Good
Greate price tag.

Bad
POOR software (good for not experienced user, bad for experienced user).
SLOW software interface - takes 20mins to setup something that should take 2 min at the most.
VERY SLOW SPEED when coping directly on to the drive (40min for 20gb file).
not NTFS file system - if board inside the cover goes down you CANT copy off the date with XP.

4 out of 5 stars worth more than it costs   October 26, 2008
Bill E. (Brooklyn, NY United States)
Unlike others here, I had a painless setup experience. The web interface is slow, but its quick as any if you just map the folders. Good security model built in. It has a gigabit ethernet connection and once I plugged it into a very inexpensive gigabit switch, data transfer is great.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage product and Worse Customer Service   October 10, 2008
Sean D. Stutzman (Somewhere in Oregon)
Purchased LaCie product to store my iTunes. Within one week the drive crashed. I called customer support and they refused to help me and honor the warranty. I eventually (year and a half later) reset the entire drive after finding no other option to save or retrieve my files, losing 10,000 songs. I began reloading the library and the system crashed again. LaCie refused to help saying the warranty had expired, but had I purchased one now, they had an extended warranty. Do not mess with LaCie equipment.
