It just works September 28, 2008 D. Bergerson (Santa Barbara, CA USA) I purchased this card after lots of years as a nVidia fanboi. I wanted this card to play Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. I wanted this card to drive a Dell 30" at 2560 x 1600.
I replaced my nVidia card, after installing Catalyst 8.7 and everything worked fine.
I was impressed with the ease of use to get it to work, truly plug and play.
I have recommended this card to numerous friends and only one has gone back to the overpriced nVidia solutions.
Buggy ATI Software (Still)! September 21, 2008 Mr. Big (California, USA) I took a 8 year hiatus from ATI video cards and switched over to Nvidia. Back then ATI drivers were notorious for being buggy, late arriving, and having issues with a few select games. I see some things haven't changes dispite the fact that AMD has purchased ATI. In this particular case it's not the driver itself this time but rather the ATI CATALYST CONTROL CENTER software that controls the display features. It suddenly displays an error message upon Windows start-up and will not load. I did NOTHING to cause this to start happening. I did a Google search and discovered all kinds of well documented cases of the same problems. In addition, when you try to uninstall the Catalyst software, it still leaves items in your hard drive's "programs" folder and in the context menu. BACK TO NVIDIA I GO!
Careful when buying this. September 17, 2008 Yousef Alsaif I've got this card two days ago and had two bad impressions. First thing, unlike most other brands this card did not come with 6-pin power connector that is needed to supply the card with power if you have PSU without 6-pin. After getting my 6-pin connector (hard to find in local shops), I ran the card and after checking its temperature it appeared to run way too hot. I'm getting 72-74c idle and up to 85c load temp, this is probably due to the poor diamond heatsink. I'll probably be forced to buy custom heatsink for this card later. Other than that I haven't got any technical issues and the card runs games as fast as expected. Minus 2 stars for the issues I had above, this card gets 3 star score.
Bang for the buck September 16, 2008 D. Mclean ATI had finally managed to get competitive again on price/performance and drivers. A lot of sites will claim this chipset is the best deal under 200 dollars, and I agree. It is very fast, very stable, and makes for a good single card solution for gamers who want high grade graphics on a sensible budget.
Best graphics deal in a long time September 13, 2008 B. Hepler (Manassas, Virginia United States) This card has been great so far (all of a couple of weeks). Every game I throw at it has been rendered smooth as silk. Colors are the typical excellent for ATI-based cards. The price was right and I didn't spend extra on game demos I didn't want. I'm now ready for the excellent games that are scheduled to arrive this fall. Sweet!
If there are possible downsides, it has to do with heat. This thing puts out a bucket of heat. I run a watercooled setup, so I'm not seeing high temps via the software, but the heat sinks I put on the RAM and voltage regulators are painfully hot to the touch. While I don't touch my video card while it is running often, that heat does get dumped into your case.
The other complaint is the typical complaint against the Catalyst Control Center software. It takes forever to initialize on boot-up, requires .NET, etc. Oh, and the automatic Overdrive function freezes my computer in under a minute, requiring a reinstallation of the CCC in order to get it out of the boot-freeze-reboot loop. But with this kind of graphics power on tap, (not to mention the high heat) why bother overclocking?
